Washington Grove, one of very few old growth forests within US city limits, is a jewel. Washington Grove has trees that have lived through eight human generations, and played host to innumerable generations of wild life. It provides an opportunity to let go and wander amid majestic trees. Large old trees towering over an understory and herbal layer inspire affection, friendliness and elation. They increase our nervous system’s serotonin. They decrease blood pressure and cortisol levels. The Friends work towards a Grove with small, well-separated, winding paths along which walkers (and runners) can lose themselves among trees and undergrowth native to the area and never be lost. We work for a Grove where urban youth can experience nature otherwise foreign to them, and the delight and it peace offers. Washington Grove is a place to wander, learn and wonder.
